I know a lot of people don’t agree with what I carry with me but keep the negative comments to yourself.I laid out all my gear and asked myself do I need this?I took a few things out.

So my bag is still the 3 day assault pack.

Cutting tool:KaBar USMC utility knife,Victorinox multi tool which has 2 knives,saw,can/bottle opener, scissors, tweezers, tooth pick, file, cork screw.Pocket wire saw that I might take out.
Cordage:about 200 ft of para cord including my boot laces and para cord bracelet I wear.10 ft of 25 pound fishing line. And a small amount of thread. Also 2 strips of duct tape.
    Container:Canteen/cook cup,stainless steel bottle,garbage bag.
Cover:the same garbage bag, poncho top and cover.
Combustion device:Matches in water proof tube with cotton inside for tinder.Magnesium fire starter.
    Food:4 MRE crackers,2 oatmeal packets,energy bar,2 sugar packets,2 salt packets.
Clothes in zip lock bags:watch cap, shemagh, bandanna, wool socks, and a long sleeve cotton shirt I will be replacing with a polyester shirt soon.I also wear a fleece jacket and composite steel toe boots which are lighter than regular steel.
Misc:tooth brush with the handle cut down to save room, small rag,1 nail,SURVIVAL Army FM21.Head lamp.
    First aid:5 Q tips,9 alcohol pads,small bandages,Neosporine,aspirin,the same thread and a needle.
Fishing kit:2 hooks and the same fishing line plus the inner core of para cord.

Just so you understand what I use this bag for,I hunt and camp in the deep woods around my grandfather’s home. There is no marked trails,no guides that go with us.I have found snake skin and seen wolves plenty of times and I know there is more dangerous animals than that out there.I always take a rifle with me when I go and if someone goes with me they usually do too and maybe a 357 magnum revolver.Yes we have hunting/fishing liscences and even gun carry permits so were not just hillbillies in the woods. Please let me know what you would take out or add and how I can improve my pack even more. Also I try to fit all the little things in my stainless steel bottle to save room. Also a signal mirror.I will probably get a whistle too.I attach my sleeping bag to the bottom of my pack before I leave too.
    @ casey
I said composite steel toe boots. It is much lighter than metal but just as strong. It is made out of some kind of extremely tough plastic. They have saved me from having a broken foot more than once.
    @ Cody

My multi tool does have all these things.I thought I put that in the list. Its a Victorinox swiss army multi tool and it has 2 very sharp blades,a wood saw,a pair of scissors,a file, tweezers, tooth pick,a cork screw,a bottle opener and can opener, and a flat head screw driver. It is an older model. Also I do carry a compass.
    @ Garrick
I use different rifles depending on what I’m hunting. When I hunt deer,I use a Remington 710 7mm magnum that holds 3 rounds in the clip and has a decent Nikon scope on it.When I hunt small game I will take a 17 HMR or 10/22 Ruger.I see a rifle as something that I would need in the woods because if I get in a stand off with a big animal,I’m not throwing a rock at it or using bear mace.I will brag and say I never miss and am a dead eye with all my rifles and rarely miss with revolvers.I know if I’m face to face with a bear or buck I take the shot in the sniper’s shot which is where the spinal cord connects to the head and it drops right there instead of getting pissed off and charging at me.Everybody has their own opinion and almost everyone says they would lose the KaBar but it is my hatchet,my saw,my flint/magnesium sparker,it is only a 60 dollar knife and it is my favorite knife and everything but I would rather use it up first and buy another one later because it is so cheap
    EDIT: sniper’s *SPOT not shot.

Ok i make those survival bracelets that you see, i make them from para-cord. I have decided I want to add a ribbon and donate $8 out of the $10 to our veterans in need (to but basic living supplies). Only reason I keep $2 is for the cost to make them. Is this a good idea. What should I do to make this idea better. Any answers are welcome. Thanks.

    Under what circumstances?
Lynn, I’m talking about bracelets made of knotted parachute cord. If you need the cord, you can unravel it and you’ll have a long length of cord. Everyone I know calls that stuff 550 cord because it holds 550 pounds without snapping, so plenty strong enough to help you pull yourself to safety. Good in theory, I just wonder if they live up to their name.

What is the purpose of a Nantucket bracelet? Is it a part of a religion or a practice or just a bracelet that you wear? All i think i know it that you put it on at the beginning on the summer and at the end you take it off (or cut it off) is that true or just a rumor. I know nothing about these bracelets.

I have a survival bracelet with a buckle. My sister got it for me as a surprise but in a 9 inch size which is way to big! I think I’m like a 7 or 8…..I never measured. Here’s the link

I need to make it smaller but I can’t find how! I Googled it but nothing came up. Any help would be awesome! Thanks!

I am just getting started on learning how to make paracord bracelets. On lighthound.com i ordered lots of different colors of 450 paracord. As i have been looking around online and on youtube i noticed that every one making the bracelets were using 550 paracord. Dose the 450 and 550 differ in width? And if so will the different size of them affect how i make my bracelets?

    ADDITIONAL INFO:
    I bought 6 colors of 450 paracord and 2 colors of 550

Okay, I’m 14 years old and I’m home schooled. My school only takes 3 hours a day max. My mom is really supportive of anything I would ever want to do and she says she would invest in anything too. So I was thinking of making my own custom jewelry website type thing but starting out as a facebook page where email me to order until I can pay for a website. The jewelry I will be making will specialize in para-cord bracelets with a feminine flare, charm bracelets, custom key chains, and custom bottle cap necklaces… Would this be a wise idea?

ok im wanting to make me a rifle sling out of parachut cord

i have the basics down as in i would buy these

    http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/standard-pod-wrapped.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/pod-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20712-cat20776&rid=&indexId=cat20776&navAction=push&masterpathid=&navCount=1&parentType=index&parentId=cat20776&id=0022129

and use them to start and finish the sling. then i figured i would do a cobra braid for a ways (the exact length of the cobra braid is still not known just big enough to make the shoulder pad) then i would do a plain braid (like when you braid someones hair) the rest of the way. i just cant figure out a knot to use to finish off my plain braid and attach it to the swivel so that it doesnt come un raveled. can someone suggest a knott that will hold 3 seperate strings nice and tight together?

and then a second question since the cobra braid is pretty small i can see 8 lbs of gun and scope digging into my shoulder so i figured doing the king cobra for the shoulder strap which is just a cobra over the top of the first cobra.. what you think?
no shit sherlock im just wanting to make a sling that gets ooos and ahhs from buddies and for my coyote rifle to help me get from point A to point B from there i have shooting sticks and a bipod if need be. im not a dam tactical shooter

Hi, I’m a guy, and I recently ordered a para-cord bracelet on Amazon. Para-cord bracelets are bracelets made out of salvaged parachute chords from real military parachute drops. It was authentic, and therefore pricey. The company I bought it from also does not take returns. The bracelet is all fine and dandy except for one thing. It’s too big! My arm swims in it. Would it be girly if I wear it on my ankle. Keep in mind I’m a thirteen-year-old boy in middle school, going into high school. Thanks!
For anyone who wants a link to the product, I bought this one:

However, there are several others available here:

I am the worse person when it comes to gifts. It’s not that I don’t care, or even that I don’t have the money (which I don’t have a lot of, and I don’t like gifts that are all about money). I’m not really a relationship type and he’s my first serious boyfriend. I know he’s apparently doing something really sweet. We agreed sweet&simple. But he’s the type of guy that goes pretty much all out for this sort of thing. On Valentine’s Day we’ll have only been dating almost 4 months. We’re both 17 & still in high school. 4 months isn’t long, but I’ve known the guy for 5 years and we’ve liked each other for over a year but mixed signals kept getting in the way lol but not the point. The point being I want to do something simple&sweet that doesn’t cost to much. The more home made the better. Right now I’m going with the basket idea that I didn’t get the chance to for Christmas. For now all I have to go in it are a batch of cookies (the cheapish walmart kind with hearts on them, it’s simple and sweet and he knows I can’t cook anything fancier haha) a rose (maybe 3 for every month we’ve been together?) and a message in a bottle (we write sweet little notes all the time and he likes to keep them in his wallet so they’re always with him but he’s been saying he’s going to end up running out of room for them so I was thinking he could start putting them in the bottle but Idk if he just wants to have them with him or…..) Also he wears necklaces (mostly just his cross) and bracelets (the para-cord ones) so I was thinking possibly matching bracelets saying “taken” or “boyfriend” and “girlfriend” or matching necklaces saying “his” and “hers”. But I’m not sure If I should add more or is this enough? should I go and get one of the heart-shaped candy boxes? I know everything about him but when it comes to holidays its like I know nothing. Please help?

I’m learning how to make survivor bracelets with the para cord and all and I was wondering if I could instead use regular yarn. And is making the bracelets hard? Also, is the para cord expensive, if so what is a good alternative. Last but not least where and how much are the clips the clip each end together.
    ASAP please reply! Thanks!

I’m planning on going up to EBC in 2014 with cadets, providing i pass the selection tests. But staying positive and planning ahead I will need to raise funds for the cost of the expedition(£1200) and cost of equipment(research tells this will come to around £1000). So just wondering If anybody has any fund raising ideas that have worked for them? I have a few ideas myself, though how realistic they are/are not is another matter. So please share your ideas :) Ps. If anybody can advice how much equipment will cost it will be greatly appreciated! Thank you :)
With all due respect, Past expeditions with cadets have cost around 2500 I’ve found through research, perhaps it’s vastly subsidised? I don’t know. Going back to the main point of the question, do either of you have any fund raising ideas?

I have gone through the basic training with my father many years ago to learn how to hang glide. In addition, I went to Airborne School in the Army, and have had 21 Non Combat related jumps, so I am familiar and comfortable with it. However, I find myself boggled when it comes to finding something as simple as a chute pack (modified back pack) and a Parachute (Strings/ Cord & Nylon Tarp). What I am getting at is this, the nuts and bolts of a parachute are not that complex or cutting edge, so why so difficult to find? Anyway, if someone could point me in the right direction with regard to a site or seller who sells parachutes I would appreciate it, likewise for the Hang Glider(s) too. Thank You very much!

A counterterrorism scene has a Delta Force operative commiting a HAHO (High Altitude High Opening) parachute jump off an MH-6 Little Bird, carrying a light rucksack and a Heckler & Kosh HK416. Where would these items be stored (on the person, of course) in an ideal setup?

The ideal beginning for jump ‘instructions’ would be at the helicopter’s takeoff, and the ideal ending on the ground, the parachute off. Any description of a HAHO jump would be appreciated as well.

(To avoid some of the reactions from before – no, I do not know this. I am fourteen. I am not an author. And I’m not expecting to become one some time soon. However, I’m trying out my hand, and I need this info to continue appropriately.)
In response to the helicopter comments: yes, my apologies – I forgot to modify the question after discovering the Little Bird has a maximum altitude much too low for what I had in mind.

When I look at the news and see where planes are just falling out of the sky and multiple lives have been lost, I feel very upset about the entire situation. Airplanes provide flotation devices, oxygen masks, and other safety mechanisms for passenger and staff safety, but why aren’t parachutes also provided for safely exiting a plane in emergency situations? Is it because there isn’t enough time? Or is it because of the latch on the doors or that television/movie disaster I saw that shows planes imploding when doors are opened? I’m really curious about this.

What kind of green tape did they use? Also they have some type of string or parachute cord or something that they put around the butt of the gun and tape to there sling then put some around the front sights and taped to the other end of there sling. What type of string is this and why did they do this? Do the U.S. Army Rangers still do this today?

I never said to land on top of the ttower I mean to hover next to the windows
Or at least throw them some ropes, or long rope ladder. If the temperature was not hot enough to kill the people waving, why would it be too hot for a helicopter to be near?
Go to the parts of the building where there were no smoke. And throw ropes so they can at least climb down to the ground

Please not answers like “that’s not a safe idea” or “you should never do it”, they don’t really answer my question. I am aware of the issues, but I am not using it for skydiving.

Go to http://www.vtarmynavy.com and you can see them. They are both 50′ of cord. Is this the stuff that the U.S. Army Rangers use like in Black Hawk Down. They tie it to the front of there M16 rifle sight and some wraped around there stock of the gun and use green 100 mile an hour tape to secure it to the stock. Then they clip there slings to the black parachute cord. Is this the right stuff, which one is better?

I’m doing some research on different canopies, and read that a conical shape is particularly designed for stabilisation, but how does its geometry do it? if its used for stability then why is its oscillation range (10-30 degrees) greater than the oscillation range of a hemispherical canopy (10 to 15 degrees)

You know that little loop of surprisingly strong cord that is on the end of camera and cell phone lanyards? It’s the part that you loop into your device and looks like it would never hold the weight but it’s very strong. It’s only 4-5 times bigger around than sewing thread. Almost always black and feels braided.

I would like to know what the name is and maybe a place where it can be purchased in a spool.

    Thanks!

It could be any kind of parachute. PLEASE specify what kind; I and most people probably don’t know the different kinds.
@Mitchel: A human being, weighing 160-180, is using it.
Also, it doesn’t need to reach maximum effectiveness, but needs to ease a person’s landing onto a typical concrete and/or asphalt city street enough so that the person using the parachute will land with little to no injuries. It just popped up into my head remembering a scene in Tron: Legacy where the main character jumps off a building and his parachute supposedly breaks his fall, but he opens it at a pretty short distance from the ground. I don’t recall how high up he seemed to be but my friend thought it was ridiculous, but that’s why I’m asking it here.

Hey, I just wanted to know how to make a paracord bracelet with 2 feet of paracord… I ended up buying one, but I didn’t like the color so I took it apart. Its two-toned(black and aqua) so half is black. I want to make an all black paracord bracelet… There isn’t much paracord to make a standard one, but it did come with prongs or whatever you call them( Kinda like clips). Hopefully that saves a few inches of paracord! Anyways, If you know of a way to make one with 2-3 feet of paracord, Please let me know! :(

I work at a ropes course, and we are continuously getting p-cord for different elements mixed up (it wouldn’t matter so much except that most of the elements are at varying heights). Today, i had the idea of using large kite winders for wrapping up the p-cord when the element is in use, and being able to label the kite winders for each specific element. Does anyone know what kind of winders I should get for roughly 150 feet (each) of 1.5mm p-cord? Websites would be very helpful. Whatever the the method, it needs to enable the quick wind up and organization of cord, as well as smooth, untangled release. Thanks!

hello! I have seen those cool bracelets that people wear, and they’re what looks like plaited, or fish tail braids or something… does anybody know how to make these? and if anyone has any good links to any websites, please add them :-D I’m 13 by the way, so I hope that they’re not too complicated! :-) Thanks in advance!! xx

I have a few questions about parachute cord or paracord:

    1) What is the difference between the two except strength?

    2) Can you make bracelets with both?

    3) Which do you prefer, 550 or 650?

    Thanks!

here’s a little background. i have owned and trained huskies german shepherds poodles(standard and miniature) along with a couple of pure mutts but i am having a huge amount of trouble with my cocker.

he knows his commands and is very smart but he only listens when he wants to. i have taken him to his first three years of dog school. he does very well there. with training in tdoesn’tse he is great. he doesnt mess in the house and he submits very easily to me.

my trouble is that when he is out of the yard, say at the beach on my camp. i will call him back to me. he will turn around look at me, then look far ahead at whatever he wants and go to it instead. heconvenientstens when it is convient for him.

he is 3.5 right now but none of my dogs have given me this much trouble for so long. in fact i had bought a standard poodle six months after buying him and she knowsand listens to all of her commands before him being six months younger. i understand that cockers are very smart but also very wilful.

i need a new training method, something to test him in the field if you say lol. when i ask him something i only asdoesn’tonce if he doesnt do it i will correct him. like if i ask hdoesn’tsit and he doesnt i will put him into the sit position. is this wrong? please help.
if you need further details just message me.

I just got a Survival Strap for Christmas and I think it is a cool idea, but mine is too long. When I sink it in water for five minutes it doesn’t seem to change size. Does it only shrink 1/4 inch or 25% of the whole length over a longer period of time?

In the movie Black Hawk Down they tie some kind of black string, cord, ???, to the sight of the M16 rifle and wrap some around there stocks and tie it to ther slings and use 100 mile an hour tape to secure it to the stock. Is Black Parachute cord what they used in the movie? If not then what did they use? Why did they use the Black Stuff on the M16′s?

We have been skydivers for about a year at a nearby airport. We pack our own chutes. Before we went out last time, I cut about one third of the cords on one side of his parachute so his chute would flap and give him a scare in good fun. I can’t believe he is still mad. How can I make him not be mad at me?

You have a pendulum weight (you), a flat-bodied sail (the parachute), and cords and harness. In the Mechanics of Physics, how do the cords between the parachute and harness work, and how does the flat-strapping of the harness work??
    Lou;

Not at all!! What I’m trying to do is to get YOU (and everybody) to see how my new technology in continuous structure frame reinforcing works!!

I am placing solid steel strapping throughout building frames in a continuous network of rings and linking cords that all have to be flat-bodied to fit along the building seams and wallsides. How the flexural strap-nets work, in relation to the rigid building frame, is the new technology!! The strap-nets work like the parachute cords, the trampoline springs, etc.
    somerand…;

Lou answered this question earlier, and all of a sudden….disappeared!!! (Probably edited himself on this one)

Glad you get the general idea of what we are doing with steel strapping. The basic concepts of continuous building and structure frame reinforcing are very similar to lots of things we use and see daily. It just seems hard for some to grasp a few of the detailed changes.

Switching to flat-bodied cords and rings allows the strapping to form-fit most building frames, and steel can be placed in 1/32″-1/2″ slack between the connection points, so that the flexure and elasticity of the strapping can occur. This is the new technology, Placed Elasticity between 360-degree connection assemblies!!

The connections act like the weight on the parachute, the strapping the cords, and the building frame the parachute sail.
